The Cemeteries of New Orleans are truly cities of the dead. Above ground interment is necessary because of New Orleans high water table, giving cemeteries the appearance of a miniature town. The predominant architectural style in tombs is a rectangle with a rounded top, but scaled down temples, Gothic cathedrals, and irregular designs of every description are also seen. Most of the tombs of the Old Creole families and American plantation owners are in Old St. Louis cemeteries #1 and #2 on Basin Street.
