Machel of Mozambique and Kaunda of Zambia in Lusaka

Sep. 09, 1974 - Lusaka Talks End 400 Years Of Colonialism: A formal end to Portugal's four hundred years of colonial domination over the East African territory of Mozambique was declared at the historic Portugal/Frelimo (socialist party of Mozambique) talks in Lusaka chaired by Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda. Mozambique's full independence will be recognised by Portugal in mid-1975 and in the interval the country will be ruled by a joint Frelimo-Portuguese Cabinet in which most of the portfolios will be held by Frelimo representatives. Frelimo's victory comes after ten years of armed struggle in Mozambique following the April coup which toppled the Caetano regime in Portugal and brought General Antonio de Spinola to power. A smiling Samora Machel, President of Frelimo - dressed in a smart blue suit rather than his usual camouflage fatigues - is offered a seat at the historic talks with Portuguese ministers by Chairman Kenneth Kaunda
