Maiden voyage of world's largest pie dish
May 05, 1964 - WORLD'S LARGEST PIE DISH MAKES ITS MAIDEN VOYAGE.: The strangest craft ever launched on Britain's waterways was making its maiden voyage yesterday. Weighing 25cwt, and measuring 18ft long, 6ft wide and 20 ins deep, it is the dish which in September will held the Denby Dale Mammoth Pie, which is to be baked at Denby Dale near Huddersfield in Yorkshire in aid of charity to commemorate the four Royal births to the Queen, Princess Margaret, Princess Alexandra and the Duchess Of Kent. This will be the seventh occasion that such a pie has been baked at Denby Dale to mark a great national event since 1788, when the first one was baked to celebrate the recovery of King George III from mental illness. Last night, after the maiden voyage from the manufacturers to Denby Dale, a gang of youths boarded the dish and sunk it, but today it has been raised from the bottom of the lock and refloated.
