Makarios III
Nov 22, 1974 - London, England, UK - (File Photo) MAKARIOS III (born Mihalis Christodoulou Mouskos) (Aug 13, 1913 - Aug 3, 1977) was the archbishop and primate of the autocephalous Cypriot Orthodox Church (1950 - 1977) and first President of the Republic of Cyprus (1960 - 1977). On July 15, 1974 he was ousted by a Greek sponsored coup d'etat, the Turkish army invaded Cyprus five days later. Makarios remained in London for five months securing international recognition that his administration was the rightful government of the whole island.
