Jul. 07, 1979 - Lumps of coal (left) and limestone particles will be churned into a turbulent inferno in studies of fluidized bed combustion at the General Electric Research and Development Center, Schenectady, N.Y. Funded in part by a three-year, .7 million contract from the Electric Power Research Institute, GE engineers and scientists will investigate this advanced coal-burning process that could provide a clean, economical source of energy for electric power plants. Blasts of compressed air, streaming up from the bottom of the combustor, will boil the burning coal and limestone into a mixture that takes on many of the characteristics of a fluid. The heat energy produced could then be used to turn water into steam to drive a generator. During combustion, sulfur released from the coal would combine chemically with the limestone instead of being released into the air. Later, the sulfur-laden limestone would be carted away with the ashes
