Dec. 12, 1953 - Election Of French President At Versailles Today: France's parliament meets at Versailles today in an annually divided condition to elect a new President of the Republic for a seven-year term. The election is done by the 947 members of Parliament, Senators and deputies combined. Visually, in the past, the presidency was considered an office of small importance. Now, however, with the chronically short lives of French cabinets becoming shorter since the war, the president is regarded as the only individual who can be relied on to give France continuity in critical times.
