Margaret Thatcher opens University College Buckingham

Feb. 02, 1976 - MRS THATCHER OPENS BRITAIN'S NEW-STYLE UNIVERSITY AT BUCKINGHAM. Opposition leader MRS MARGARET THATCHER today opened Britain's newest free enterprise university- University College at Buckingham - the first non-maintained university since Oxford and Cambridge joined the state system after the Second World War. Charging fees are, 500 a year and a high proportion of the 73 students are from overseas. Many of them have joined the university because its the only plane where they can take a degree in two years. this newest educational venture was made possible by an anonymous gift of, 000, 000.
