Feb. 02, 1976 - Mrs. Thatcher opens Britain's new - style University at Buckingham: Opposition leader, Mrs. Margaret Thatcher today opened Britain's newest free enterprice University- University College at Buckingham - the first non - maintained University since Oxford and Cambrige joined the State system after the second world war. Changing fees are ?1, 500 a year and a high proportion of the students are from overseas. Many of them have joined the University because its the only place where they can take a degree in two years. This newest educational venture was made possible by an anonymous gift of ?1, 000, 000. The Principal of the new University College is professor Max Beloff.
