Marina Stcherbatcheff, engaged to Boris Spassky
Sep. 09, 1975 - Trouble over Spassky's new bride: 30 year old Marina Stcherbatcheff, the woman whom chess master Boris Spassky wants to marry but they have hit trouble. Marina said We will learn this week the final decision of the Soviet authorities. She and 38-year old Spassky wanted to marry in Grenoble on September 15th, but Spassky says he was being refused permission to travel abroad. The authorities have said they may marry in Moscow in November but they have ordered Marina to leave by September 30. She is afraid they will not let her back into Russia for the wedding. Spassky was divorced this year from his previous wife, Larisa, He met Marina, a secretary at the commercial office of the French Embassy, last November, now her embassy, bowing to Soviet pressure, is ending her contract two years ahead of schedule. In a plea to the authorities, Spassky has cited the agreement at the recent Helsinki Summit that Nations would look favourably upon marriages between people of different nationalities'.
