Marina Stcherbatcheff, engaged to Boris Spassky

Sep. 09, 1975 - Former Chess World Champion, defeated by American Bobby Fischer in 1972, 38 year-old divorce Boris Spassky, intends to start his life over with 30 year old Marina Stcherbatcheff, granddaughter of a tsarist officer. But Marina, who works as an administrative assistant for the Commercial Mission of the French Embassy in Moscow, just found herself invited to leave Soviet territory to avoid a trial. In July 1974, she had loaned a car with a government tag to a Soviet woman who caused an accident. Marina wasn't worried at that moment in time, but as soon as the marriage was announced, the Soviet authorities reopened the case by announcing that one of the accident's victims had decided to press charges against the owner of the vehicle. The marriage of Boris and Marina is very compromised because Marina has got to leave the Soviet Union at the end of the month, even though the authorities have decided on November 11th for the marriage celebration
