Mario Soares and Alvaro Cunhal, TV debate, Portugal
Nov. 07, 1975 - The big televised debate in Portugal between Mario Soares (General Secretary of the Socialist Party) and Alvaro Cunhal (General Secretary of the Communist Party) ended today. Many observers found that Mario Soares did not mince his words in comparison with Cunhal. To end the debate, Soares told him that between the happiness of the Portuguese people and the offer of a Lenin Medal, he prefers the first one: the well-being of Portugal and its independence
