Mathias Gerusel v Helmut Schmidt in chess match, Germany

May 05, 1973 - German Finance Minister at the Chessboard - Checkmate for Helmut Schmidt (R), and no way out! He was taking part in the Finance Ministry's twentieth anniversary celebrations. Among many other things, a Chess match was arranged, against the International Chess master from Bonn, Mathias Gerusel (L), in which 30 players took him on'. The sporty Finance Minister (he was formerly a successful rower and is an enthusiastic sailor), did very well in his match, with a hotly-contested draw. For Gerusel, this conveyor-belt contest was no doubt good practice for the International German Chess Championships, which take place between May 17th and June 2nd in Westfalenpark, Dortmund
