Accused of Death of 46, 061 Greek Jews: The trial is being held before the Military Court in Athens of Max Merten, ex-German Army Officer - Commander of Salonica and military advisor to the German Military Command of North Greece. He is accused of causing the death of 46, 061 Greek Jews. They were killed in reprisal for acts of sabotage, some while being transported to concentration camps. he is also accused of confiscating their property and appropriating it for himself and his colleagues. Now a lawyer, Merten was arrested in Greece in May 1957 when he arrived as a representative of a German travel agent.
