Maximilian Schell, actor and director, in Jedermann

Dec. 12, 1980 - 50th Birthday Of Maximilian Schell: On December 8th 1980 the actor, film-director, author and film-producer Maximilian Schell will be 50 years old. Schell, coming from an artist-family, was born in Vienna, Austria. He studied history of art and literature, German philology, science of theatre and music in Zurich, Basel and Munich. 1952 he started his artistic career in Basel, then he went to Essen, Bonn, Lubeck, Munich and Hamburg, West Germany. At the end of the sixties he went to London, where he was a guest-star at the Royal Court; after that he went to New York. His first film was Kinder, Mutter und ein General (1955)(Children, mother and a general), then he was successful in films like Das Urteil von Nurnberg (The judgement of Nuremberg), Die Akte Odessa (The document Odessa), Steiner, Julia'. The first film directed by him was Erste Liebe (First love)- it was awarded 14 times, after that Der Furganger (The pedestrian), Der Richter und sein Henker (The judge and his executioner), Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald (Stories from the Wienerwald). At the Salzburger Festspiele 1979 he played the title role in the play Jedermann (Everyman) (our picture) and Schnitzler's Weites Land (large counting as also directed by him). Awards: Critics Prize of New York 1961-1978. Oscar 1961, Golden Globe 1974, Golden Cup 1974 and Oscar'-nominations in the years 1970-1975 and 1978
