Mayor of Londonderry and Lord Mayor of London

Oct. 10, 1974 - A Happy Story from Northern Ireland: If goodwill can help solve the present troubles in Northen Ireland, as many believe it can, a practical demonstration of this took place today in the City of London. Northern Ireland may be some distance from London, but the City has for long had close links with it and in particular with the City of Londonderry. In June this year this was epitomised by the holiday in England for a hundred Catholic and Protestant children from Londonderry, arranged by the churches of the City of London. While the children were here they came to the City, visited the Tower of London, and were entertained to tea in the Guildhall by the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, Sir Hugh Wontner and Lady Wontner. Such was the success of the holiday, that people in Londonderry asked their Mayor, Mr J Allen, to come to the City of London with his wife to show their appreciation and to present the Lord Mayor with a token of their thanks. The presentation of a plaque, bearing the Arms of the City of Londonderry, took place at the end of the meeting of the City's Court of Common Council at Guildhall.
