Oct. 10, 1959 - Sir Walter Raleigh Statue Unveiled. Ceremony Performed by U.S. Ambassador: Mr.John Hay Whitney the United States Ambassador to London this morning unveiled the new Sir Walter Raleigh Statue on the lawn in front of the new Air Ministry Building in Whitehall. The statue was sculptored by William McMillan R.A. and paid for by a number of City Bodies, the Ends of the Earth Club and the English Speaking Union - and is to mark the 350th. anniversary of the first permanent British colony in Jamestown, Virginia.
