May 05, 1958 - Digging for the Barkstead Treasure at the Tower: Digging began at the Tower of London this morning in the search for the Barkstead Treasure reputed to have been hidden there in the 17th. century. Excavations are taking place at the Bell Tower and the space below the boiler room of the Governor's residence. The treasure estimated at various times between £7, 000 and £40, 000 was thought to have been secreted by Sir John Barkstead who was Governor of the Tower during Cronwell's rule. He was later himself executed (1662). Many previous attempts have been made to find the treasure. The Ministry of Works is in charge of the present search. Photo shows Major C.A.
