Mar. 27 The Line that Divides the World.: At the bottom of the Cerro de la Marca, a few kilometres outside Quito. a monument stands on the exact line that supposedly divides the world into two hemispheres; the equator. Ever since the 18th. Century when the exact measurement of the Meridian line was carried out by the French scientists La Condamine and M.Godin (and continued during the 20th century by the scientists of the Astronomical Observatory in Quito) it was believed that the obelisk marked the Equatorial line. In June 1964, however, an official study carried out by the Military Geographic Institute of Ecuador found that the monument was located 164 metres south of the dividing line. A recent study made with the most modern measuring equipment and the observations carried out with the astronomer Danjon in the Quito observatory found that the Equatorial line was 307.4 North of the present monument. Until now, this seems to be the most accurate measurement of the exact place where the world supposedly is divided in two, There's a possibility that the obelisk may be moved within a short time to the exact spot for in this age of laser-beams, computers and domination of the cosmos a difference in metres and centimetres cannot be tolerated. Photo shows The monument which indicates (erroneously) the exact spot where the world is divided in two
