Apr. 05 Standing near the sea wall at Macau is a large statue to Governor Joan Ferrerira do Amaral who was assassinated on August 22ns 1849. Amaral had incurred the enmity of the Chinese by his expulsion of the Hoppu or Chinese custom Office inacau when he set up free trade atacau, establishing the colony on a footing similar to that of Hong Kong, founded in 1841-42. While riding along a road he had just had built near the Chinese frontier, he and his aide were attacked by seven Chinese, he fought bravely with his one arm, the other having been lost in a naval engagement years before, but he was killed.
