Apr. 05 The statue of Colonel Vincente Nicolau de Mesquita in the main square of Lacau. He was the hero of an episode in the history of Macau. In 1849, while a lieutenant of artillery he volunteered with a party of 36 men to take a fort held by the Chinese on the frontier. He succeeded. This incident followed the assasination of Governor Joao Ferreira do Amaral by the Chinese. The statue shows the Colonel drawing his sword. He died in 1880
