Mar. 03, 1962 - Famous London Landmark Starts To Come Down. Demolition of The South Bank Shot Tower. One of the most famous of London's Landmarks - the Shot Tower at South Bank - is now being demolished - to make room for a new concert hall. The Tower is 200 ft. tall - and the walls at the base are about three feet thick. It was built 136 years ago - by David Riddall. It was built for the production of lead shot - being used for this purpose for more than a century - molten lead being dropped into vats of cold water to bubble to the surface at the rate of 21 million pellets a day - for shotgun cartridges.
