Twentieth Anniversary Of Bloody Battle OF Iwo Jima. Twenty years ago this week - February 19th. the tiny Pacific Island years ago this week - February 19th. the tiny Pacific Island of Iwo Jima was the scene of one of the bloodiest battles in history - between invading forces of the United States and the Japanese Defenders. The battle lasted for 26 days during which time 4, 590 Americans and more than 20, 000 Japanese died - while the numbers wounded have never been calculated. The Island is only five miles by three - and except for Mount Suribachi in the centre (546 ft) is little above sea level. at that time the island was of vital importance to both the Americans and the Japanese - but has once again receded into insigific ance. For the first time since 1945 a Japanese delegation has visited the Isalnd fro a memorial service to their dead. Only a few relics remain wreckage of a landing craft etc. Photo shows Carved into the rock of Mount Suriashi is a replica of the historic scene when five US Marines raised their flag to its summit. Only two of the five men survive today
