May 05, 1969 - Papyrus Boat To Cross The Atlantic: A Pharaonic style ceremony was held at the base of Myceranus Pyramid at Giza to mark the completion of Norwegian anthropologist, Thor Reyerdahl's Papyrus boat in which he will endeavour to cross the Atlantic. The purpose of the journey is to prove that ancient Egyptians could have crossed the Atlantic in their Papyrus boats and conveyed the civilization of Pharaonic Egypt to the American continent. Photo shows: The Papyrus boat, built according to the ancient techniques in Egypt, was hauled by undergraduates to the base of the Myceranus Pyramid. It was then transferred to a lorry for the journey to Alexandria Harbour
