Jul. 07, 1967 - New Underground Setting For Crown Jewels The Tower: The crown Jewels, for which the Lord Chamberlain is responsible to the Sovereign, go on view to the Public tomorrow (July 6) in a new setting at the Tower of London.They are housed in an underground strong hold which has been designed and built by the Ministry of Public Building and Works to show the Rehalia to the best advantages. The Cost of the work, including installation of air conditioning and a complete electronic system, was 60, 000.A number of items including Plate, belonging to Royal collection not previously shown to the public. have been added to the display. Many of these are to be seen in the Upper Chamber (on the ground floor) where also displayed are some of the Sovareign's Cornonation robes and Mantles of the Orders of the Chivalry. Until now, visitors to the Crown Jewels, formerly kept in the Wakefield Tower, have queued under an awning while waiting to see the Regalia. The much improved facilities will enable them to spend some time viewing exhibits in the Upper Chamber while waiting their turn to see the main items of the Regalia iin the Lower Chamber containing the Crown Jewels.
