Miguel de Oliveira and Koichi Wajima in boxing match

Jan. 01, 1973 - Title fight decision stuns boxing fans in Japan and Brazil. World Junior middleweight champion Koichi Wajima of Japan barely succeeded in retaining his title in his fight with challenger Miguel de Oliveira of Brazil by scoring a draw in their 15-round contest in Tokyo's Municipal Gymnasium. The Japanese referee and judge scored it 71-71 and 73-71 for Wajima, while boxing experts said Oliveira had won. Oliveira said that he would like to fight Wajima again, but not in Japan.
