Jul. 07, 1954 - General Gruenther Attends Memorial Service At Slapton In Honour Of US. Troops: General Alfred M. Gruenther, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, attend a memorial service on a quiet Devonshire beach yesterday honour of U.S. troops who trained on Slapton Sands, Devon, ten years ago, for the invasion of the Normandy. In the wall the villagers of the South Hams area were evacuated from their homes and farms to clear a battle training field for the Americans. These people were presents at the ceremony.
