Oct. 10, 1955 - WORLD'S MOST POWERFUL FLAT-TOP CHRISTENED AT NEW YORK NAVAL SHIPYARD USS SARATOGA, newest of the Navy's attack carriers, was christened at New York Naval Shipyard, Brooklyn, by Mrs. Charles S. Thomas, wife of the Secretary of the Navy. Heralded by the Navy as the nworld's most powerful warship, the 60, 000-ton flat-top is almost five blocks long and more than a block wide. Her propulsion equipment, built by the General Electric Company in Lynn, Mass. will develop over 200, 000 horsepower - more than that of any operating vessel including her recently commissioned sister ship, the USS FORRESTAL. In addition, the SARATOGA is equipped with several other advances in aircraft carrier design including angled flight deck and steam catapults. Dock trials for the giant carrier are scheduled for November 7
