Jun. 06, 1955 - During a ceremony in the Pentagon Building, Washington, D.C. 20 June 1955, General Nathan F. Twining, Chief of Staff, U.S. Air Force (left) presented the First Oak Leaf Cluster to the Distinguished Service Medal to Maj. Gen. Jacob e. Smart, recently appointed Assistant Vice Chief of Staff, U.S. Air Force, from Ridgeland, South Carolina. Gen. Smart distinguished himself by exceptionally maritorious service to the United States as Deputy for Operations, Far East Air Forces from 18 January 1952 to 1 April 1955. The sound tactical judgment, analytical strategic perception and professional ability of General Smart were instrumental factors in the successful prosecution of the air war against the enemy in North Korea
