Feb. 02, 1958 - First Closeup Of Atlas: In this photo released by the U.S. A. Air Force, the Atlas intercontinentakl ballistic missile stands clear on its launching pad at the Air Force Missile Test Center, Cape Canaveral, Fla. The gantry tower used in readying the huge bird for flight is being rolled away from the launch stand. Work platforms installed at regular levels in the tower's center fold upward before the gantry is moved back from the pad. Launcher arms clutching the missile stablize and tie down the Atals during final fueling and ngine ignition. Visible in the background, between legs of the tower, is another Atals gantry tower at AFMTC, where Convair Division of General Dynamics Corporation is testing the nation's firct ICBM for the U.S. Air Force. The Atals is in pilot production at the San Diego, Calif. plant to Convair-Astronautics
