Dec. 12, 1957 - The Navy Certificate of Merit, for significant achievement in connection with the design and construction of the USS Nautilus, world's first atomic powered submarine, was presented to General Dynamic's Corporation's Electric Boat Division at Groton, Conn. Rear Admiral Milton E. Miles, Commandant, Third Naval District, makes the first presentation of the award to Carleton Shugg, Dynamics senior vice president. Award was given at commissioning of third A-sub Skate, seven months ahead of schedule
