Aug. 08, 1958 - Radm E. H. Thiele, USCG New Coast Guard Engineeer in Chief; At the Treasury Department today Rear Admiral Edward H. Thiele, USCG, was sworn in as Engineer in Chief of the United States Coast Guard for a four year term. A. Gilmore Flues, Assistant Secretary for Coast Guard Affairs, administered the oath of office. Rear Admiral Thiele succeeded Rear Admiral Kenneth K. Cowart, USCG, who was first appointed August 1, 1950. As Engineer in Chief, Rear Admiral Thiele assumes responsibilities of the activiites and effectiveness of the entire Coast Guard engineering program. a program which embraces the design, construction, repair, and maintenance of vessels, boats, aircraft, vehicles, aids to navigation, and shore establishments, all with associated machinery and electonic equipment. He will exercise techinical control over the Coast Guard yard and the field testing and develpment unit at Curtis Bay, Md. the Aircraft Repair and Supply base at Elizabeth City, N. C. and the Electonics Engineering Test Station at Wildwood, N. J. Coincident to these and othe responsibility he will act as a Chairman of the Ship Sturcture Committee
