Aug. 08, 1955 - Gun battle drama on holiday beach crazy gunman is shot dead after going berserk : holidaymakers raced for cover at Broadstairs yesterday as a man from Chicago fought a gangster - style gun battle with American air force police. It ended when Chicago born Napoleon Greene, 21. a black airman from the nearby American air base at Manston. shot himself, before greene died in front of hundreds of holidaymakers at the crowded seaside resort he killed three men and wounded nine other people, including two English girls. Greene ran amok at manston. He raided the armory, swept offices and roads with a hail of bullets, forced a sergeant at gunpoint to drive him towards broadstairs and refused to surrender when trapped on the beach.
