Feb. 26 Pilot Phil Johnston prepares to take-off in the Flying Platform Navy Flying Platform This unusual research aircraft, the flying platform, was built by Hiller Helicopters, Palo Alto, Calif. under contract with the office of Naval Research. The pilot, Mr. Phil Johnston, Hiller test pilot, prepares to take off in the one passenger flying platform. He controls the horizontal direction of the aircraft by simply shifting his weight. The Flying Platform is the first aircraft using a ducted fan for lift and propulsion to attain free flights
