Apr. 18 Men of the 27th Infantry Battle Group, U.S. Army, have been flown from Hawaii to the jungle rendezvous 40 miles west of Korat on the Thai-Laos border, following the developments in Laos, recently. There, they are combating the intense heat, deadly snakes and dubious Buddhist monks in saffron robes who may well be sending intelligence reports to the enemy on troop movements and supply estimates. But the Americans are playing it cool; as the climate may allow, naming their airstrip Friendship Highway and working out what they euphemistically call defensive positions along the green-hell border. They even find time to take elephant rides, such is the juxtaposition of war and peace.
