Aug. 08, 1960 - Soldier Guinea - Pigs Visit The Hampstead Sweat Box': Sixty soldiers are acting as volunteer guinea pigs in the Army Medical Tests - to find out whether a man's efficiency drops when he is posted form a cold climate to a hot one. Many of these tests are being carried out at the Medical Research Council's Climatic Chamber. The Army calls it the Hampstead Hot Box In it the men - coated in perspirstion setp up on to foot high stools - pause - then step back to the floor again and again. They keep this up for 30 minute sessions with thirty minutes rest between. They are exhausted at the end of a four hour session - for the box temperature is 104 deg. F. with a relative humidity of 70.c. The effect of the exercises on the men are checked by medical experts continually.
