Miner rents Darlaston Hall

Sep. 09, 1950 - A Miner Rents A Mansion: A light flickered last night in the bedroom where Queen Elizabeth once slept at Darlaston Hall. Mrs Dora Henderson, 39, miner's wife, was still at work - redecorating her new home. With sturdy sweeps of her whitewash brush, she was giving the place a clean-up. And her son, Harry, 14, was holding a lantern for her as she worked. A few months ago miner Harry Henderson, 50, left his native Newcastle-on-Tyne with his family. We decided to go South and open a boarding-house, Dora said. They got as far as Mooriden (Warwickshire) and saw the empty hall. A dozen squatter families had recently moved out. The Hendersons traced the owner, took a seven-year lease, and moved in. Dora has been busy day and night over since. So has Harry, in between shifts, at Karesley Pit, Coventry. In three months they have redecorated nearly a dozen of the twenty-five rooms. Dora said: In another three months I reckon I'll be ready to open my boarding house and perhaps a nice little pull-in cafe, if the council allow it. I reckon the transport men will like the grand approach
