Aug. 08, 1957 - Polish envoy in London escape drama - wife ordered to spy on her husband: A Polish diplomat has escaped from his Embassy's secret police after a scuffle in a London street. He came out of hiding last night after the Home Office granted him political asylum. The diplomat, 26 year old Mieczyslaw Reluga, assistant to the Polish Commercial Attache. Embassy chiefs made a report on him. He was due to sail tomorrow in the liner Batory - but he got ready to flee. Then a friend telephoned and warned him that they knew he was going to try to escape. He was told he must leave at once and that secret police might seize his 4 year old son, Richard, as hostage. Reluga hurried back to his quarters, raced up the stairs past Embassy officials, grabbed his son and took him out to friends. Then he ran back to pack some of his belongings while his friends called Scotland Yard and hailed a taxi. While the taxi waited outside the building, the Scotland Yard man arrived to watch from a distance. Reluga came out with his cases and at that moment a Polish secret police agent drove up, leapt out, and tried to detain Reluga, but he shrugged him off, got into the taxi and drove off with his son, leaving the agent angrily waving his arms. That was last Tuesday, and last night Reluga described how his blonde 24 year old wife Melania spied on him after he was suspected of having western sympathies. A fortnight ago she flew home
