Model of St Peter by Edwin Russell, for St Paul's Cathedral

Mar. 27 Twelve statues for St. Paul's : The first of the twelve new statues, the work of sculptor Edwin Russell, of Hindhead, Surrey is almost ready to be hoisted into position so that the artist and cathedral officials may view it from ground level. The twelve foot high full size clay model of St.Peter was photographed in the artist's studio. The original figures depicting the twelve Apostles were the work of artist Francis Bird and placed on the cathedral in the early seventeen hundreds. These new figures are in no way like the originals, for, they are the artist's interpretation of how he sees the roles of the twelve saints. Each figure will weigh between 25 and30 tons and the entire project will take ten years, and is part of the three million pound restoration plan for the cathedral
