Monk in Athos Monastery
Dec. 19 Athos Monastery Republic. The lowering of the standard of recruits may have had a lot to do with the deterioration of its spiritual atmosphere. Many go to Athos fairly late in life; it is the desire to end their days in some quiet spot, rather than the mystic urge, that sends them there. This monk joined the Athos community after spending a number of unsuccessful years in the United States. Having travelled on the Queen Mary on his homeward trip, he has had his cell decorated like the cabin he occupied on that trip a wistful reminder of the beloved world into which he could not fit
