Jan. 22, 1959 - 22.1.59 Mike Hawthorn killed in road crash Mike Hawthorn, the 29-year old world champion racing driver, who, only a month ago retired from motor racing, was killed in a road crash at Guildford, Surrey today. His Jaguar car was in collision with a lorry on the Guildford by-pass. It doubled-somersaulted, then smashed against a tree, killing him outright.
