Jan. 24, 1959 - Tributes At Scene of Hawthorn's Death.: Motorists yesterday made a shrine of the tree-stump where world champion racing driver Mike Hawthorn was killed on the Guildford by-pass on Thursday. Near it they left bunches of flowers. Police, fearing it would lead to a dangerous pile-up on the road, ordered it to be taken down.what was left of the tree was hacked away by Surrey County Council workmen, Bright yellow daffodil and many hedge of Hawthorn. The police said: Cars coming alon at high speed were pulling up sharp when they released that this was where Hawthorn died. we did not like having to move the flowers but we had to, The road was becoming congested, sightseeres were causing an construction.
