Jan. 01, 1959 - MIKE HAWTHORN KILLED AS HIS CAR HITS A TREE ON GUILDFORD BY-PASS MIKE HAWTHORN, Britain champion racing driver who flirted with death hundreds of times on racing circuits, died today in a car crash at Guildford, Surrey. His black Jaguar was in collision with a lorry on the Guildford By-pass. It double-somersaulted, then smash against a tree, killing Mike Hawthorn outright. The death of the 29-year-old champion came only a month after he had retired from motor racing while he was the holder of the sport greatest honour.
