Jan. 01, 1959 - Mike Hawthorn Is Killed When His Car Skidded And Hits A Tree On The Guildford By-Pass: Like Hawthorn, Britain's world champion racing driver, died today when his car skidded on the wet road and hit a tree at Guildford, Surrey. The death of Hawthorn, who was 29, came only a month after he had retired from motor racing while he was the holder of the world's greatest honour.
