Feb. 26 Bjorn Waldegaard in car Number 3, a Mercedes 450 SLC works model, . with battered left side door, negotiates a river in the driest ever Safari, Waldegaard who complained of steering difficulties throughout the third leg after leading throughout almost the second leg had more misery as he approached the Runvenjes section on Mt Kenya in the final stages. Three bolts sheared on his front axle and it was discovered the threads on his rear axle were gone also and there was no spare axle left. Waldegaard, reigning world rally oampanion. limped home in tenth place
