May 26, 1967 - New Lotus Formula one car: The first-ever ford powered Lotus formula one car will make it debut at the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandwoort on Sunday, June 4th. Known as the lotus type 49, the car gas been designed so that the new ford 3liltre V8 engine is an integral part of the chassis end the monoque body of the car is mounted at four points on the front free of the engine and the rear suspension on the other side of the engine. Forty gallons of fuel are carried in three aircraft-type flexible fuel cells between the engine anf the driver. By adopting this new type of design and construction the weight of the latest lotus Formula one car is very close to the minimum specified weight for the formula of 1102 lbs. At the present stage of development the engine is producing 4bhp and this power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a special ZF 5 speed transmission. Specially east magnisium alloy wheels have been designed to carry the widest Firestone racing tyres yet still permit the ventilated 12 in. diameter disc brakes to be ina direct air flow. The slim cookpit of the new Lotus has been so designed that it can be quickly tailored to take either the 5ft. 8in. of Jim clark or the 6ft. plus if Graham Jill. The steering wheel has been offset to allow the driver easier access to the gear lever which is mounted high on the right hand side of the cockpit without any bulges intruding into the smooth outer skin of the car.
