1970 - Lotus Unveil Their New 200 M.P.H. Grand Prix Racing Car - The Lotus 72. To contest World Constructors and Drivers Championship Honours during 1970. Team Lotus introduce their new contender, the Lotus 72. This is primarily the work of Maurice Phillippe, the chief designer for Team Lotus and represents a vast step forward in concept from previous Grand Prix cars. In appearance the most striking visible features are the location of the radiators amidships, and the ultra low build of the aerodynamically designed wedge shaped body, which have evolved from study of models in the wind-tunnel. Power comes from the Ford Cosworth DFV- V-8 engine which now powers most of the successful cars in the Grand Prix field. The car can reach speeds up to 200 mph, and will make its début in the Spanish Grand Prix on April 19th.
