Jan. 01, 1971 - Nina Rindt receives a double tribute An imposing figure from motor racing history, Alfred Neubauer, the legendary former racing team manager of Mercedes-Benz, presented two trophies bearing his name to Madame Nina Rindt, the widow of the 1970 World Champion Jochen Rindt, during a ceremony at the Racing Car Show at Olympia today. Now in his 80th year, Neubauer flew from Stuttgart to meet Madame Rindt who also flown in specially from Geneva. The trophies posthumously honour the achievement of Jochen Rindt in winning in 1970 Driver's World Championship in which he had built up an unassailable lead before he was so tragically killed in the Italian Grand Prix in September. They take the form of a beautiful bronze model of the W.196 Streamliner Grand Prix Mercedes, and a plaque showing Alfred Neubauer in action as team manager during the 1954 French Grand Prix. The plaque is a new trophy, specially commissioned by Mercedes-Benz (Great Britain) Ltd. to celebrate Neubauer's 80th birthday.
