Jun. 06, 1972 - A Decisive Victory for the French Matra Team in the Le Mans 24-Hour Car Race: The 24-hour Le Mans race resulted in a decisive victory for the French Matra Team which finished first and second after fighting off a determined challenge by Italy's Alfa Romeos. It was the first French win at Le Mans for 22 years. The two winning matras crossed the line side by side, but the winning car of Britain's Graham Hill and Frenchman Henri Pescarolo was in fact 10 laps ahead of the second Matra. Photo shows British driver Graham Hill at speed in the Matra during the 24-hour Le Mans race
