Oct. 10, 1976 - Andretti wins japan GP, but Hunt wins world racing title: Despite suicidal weather James Hunt of Britain clinched the world racing drivers championship at the Fuji speedway in Colombo, as he drove his Melaren into third place in the Japan formula one race won by Mario Andretti of U.S.A in a Lotus. Niki Lauda of Austria the defending champion dropped out of the race after the second Lap, Saying the speedway was too dangerous owing to rain and fog. and he could not see. The cars competing finished the 73 laps as dusk was falling. James Hunt of Britain in his Mclaren leads the field as his speeding car sends up clouds of spray from the rain soaked speedway, despite the rain 72, 000 turned out to see the race
