Feb. 02, 1977 - Niki Lauda Receives The Golden Award For World's Bravest Sportsman At The Guildhall: Niki Lauda, the former world motor racing champion from Austria, received from the Lord Mayor of London Sir Robin Gillett, the Golden Laurel Wreath, during the luncheon on the occasion of the Presentation of the Victoria Sporting Club International Awards for Valour in Sport. Niki received nominations from five continents. The judges unanimously agreed he should be given the award. What evoked this response was a near fatal disaster at Nurburgring during the German Grand Prix, in which he received several burns to his lungs and face, and was given the last rights, but in six weeks he was back on the track racing again, coming in fourth.
